Community Chests are fund raising organizations that collect money from local businesses and workers to distribute it to community projects. They were first founded in 1913 and have been working to raise funds to help bring about development in the society. They are the cooperative organization of people and social welfare agencies in a city.
Community Chest funds are also known as United Funds and serve two purposes. They raise funds through an annual campaign for the member agencies and budget the raised funds. The amount is administered by the community chest itself or also as a joint endeavor with a community welfare council. The funds raised are used in projects which will improve the quality of life of residents, groups and communities throughout the country.
The funds are used for the developmental purposes which may include projects to improve social, linguistic, cultural and recreational opportunities, enhance employment prospects, enterprise and skills of the local people, improve the local environment and infrastructure, improve community safety and conserve environment. This is done on a local as well as global scale.
They are non-profitable organizations and the amount raised in the form of funds is utilized in the upgrading of the community by working on different fields.
